Graphene Oxide Droplets Form Spider-Web and Mosaic Patterns

Graphene Oxide Droplets Form Spider-Web and Mosaic Patterns

Researchers studied what happens when tiny drops containing graphene oxide dry.

Graphene oxide is made of very thin carbon sheets mixed into water.

Some drops dried into lines that looked like spider webs.

Other drops dried into small patches that looked like mosaic tiles.

The pattern depended on the size of the sheets and how much oxygen they contained.

X-rays showed that the sheets arranged themselves differently inside the liquid.

Flow tests also showed that one mixture behaved more like a liquid, while the other behaved more like a soft solid.

The study may eventually help scientists make printed electronics and sensors more evenly, but it did not create a finished sensor.
