Australia Modifies Temporary Residence Visa Rules
Australia has changed the rules for a special visa that lets skilled workers live and work there permanently.
This visa, called the Temporary Residence Transition visa, now requires workers to complete their work experience with a special sponsor.
The new rules start on November 29, 2025.
Workers must have worked for at least two years with a sponsor to qualify.
If they have a certain type of visa, they can work for any company for six months starting in December 2024, and this work can count towards their visa requirements.
Employers need to check the work history of these workers if they want to sponsor them for a permanent visa.
Australia has updated the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) visa rules effective November 29, 2025.
Applicants must complete work experience with an authorized sponsor to qualify for the TRT stream of the Subclass 186 visa.
Eligible visas include Subclass 457, 482, or eligible bridging visas.
Workers must be nominated by an Australian employer whose nomination was approved within the last six months.
482 (SID) visa holders can work for any company for six months from December 2024, and this work can count towards the TRT visa requirements.
