Axis Seeks $28.9B in World Bank Arbitration Against Guinea
Axis International, a company based in the United Arab Emirates, is asking the World Bank for USD 28.9 billion.
They say Guinea, a country in Africa, unfairly took away their rights to a big bauxite mine.
The mine has a lot of bauxite, which is used to make aluminum.
Axis says they invested a lot of money in the mine and built roads and plants.
Guinea said the mine wasn't being used properly and took away the permit without talking to Axis.
Axis thinks this is unfair and wants the World Bank to help them get their money back.
They also think this might make other companies nervous about investing in Guinea.
Axis International Ltd has initiated arbitration against Guinea seeking USD 28.9 billion in compensation.
The dispute arises from Guinea's termination of Axis International's rights to the country's second-largest bauxite mine.
Axis International claims Guinea ignored settlement discussions and terminated the mining permit without notice.
The arbitration is being conducted under both the 2011 bilateral investment treaty between Guinea and the UAE and Guinea's 1995 Investment Code.
Axis International has invested over USD 250 million in the mine's infrastructure, including roads and plants.
