Climate Heatwave Could Raise Champagne Alcohol To 15 Percent

A very hot and dry summer made some French grapes sweeter than usual.

Yeast turns grape sugar into alcohol when champagne is made.

Because these grapes contain more sugar, the resulting champagne could reach 15 percent alcohol.

Champagne traditionally has an alcohol limit of 13 percent.

France’s National Origin and Quality Institute allowed a one-time exception.

Experts say climate change could make this happen more often in the future.

Some champagne makers worry that customers may not want stronger wine.

They may mix it with lower-alcohol champagne to reduce the final strength.
