India’s August E-Way Bills Signal Firm Economic Activity
An e-way bill is an electronic document used when qualifying goods worth more than ₹50,000 are transported.
Businesses generated about 139.1 million e-way bills in August.
This was 7.7% more than in August last year.
August’s total was slightly lower than July’s, but it was still the third-highest monthly total recorded.
E-way bills help show how many goods are moving across the country.
Experts use them as a sign of trade, business activity and tax compliance.
EY India said the strong numbers reflected formal business activity and steady consumer demand.
The government also postponed planned changes to the e-way bill system, while GST revenue increased in August.

August recorded the third-highest monthly total, behind March’s 140.60 million and July’s 139.79 million.
Generation fell 0.51% from July but stayed above 130 million for the fifth consecutive month of FY27.
EY India’s Saurabh Agarwal attributed the sustained levels to compliance, formalisation, resilience and consumption demand.
Gross GST revenue rose 14.8% to ₹1.99 trillion, while planned e-way bill system changes were deferred again.
