Ecuadorian UN Candidate Baki Pledges Conflict Prevention and Renewal

Ecuadorian UN Candidate Baki Pledges Conflict Prevention and Renewal

Ivonne Baki is campaigning to become the next leader of the United Nations.

She says her experience living through Lebanon’s civil war shaped her commitment to peace.

Baki wants the United Nations to work harder to stop wars before they begin.

She says she would visit conflict zones and talk directly with people involved.

She also wants to renew the United Nations and make its Security Council more representative.

The current leader, Antonio Guterres, is expected to leave after two five-year terms.

Eight candidates are competing for the position, although more could join.

Baki was nominated too late to take part in the first informal poll.

The winner will need to avoid opposition from any of the five permanent Security Council members.
