Bangladesh Sees Surge in Suicides, 40 Daily Deaths
In Bangladesh, there has been a big increase in the number of people taking their own lives.
On average, 40 people die by suicide every day.
This is according to data shared by the police.
The most common ways people are taking their own lives are by hanging, poisoning, or jumping in front of trains.
The district of Jashore has the highest number of suicides.
Experts say that to stop this, many different groups need to work together, not just the health department.
They also say that the actual numbers might be even higher than what the World Health Organization has reported.
Bangladesh saw an average of 40 daily suicides from 2020 to 2024, totaling 73,597 deaths.
From January to October 2025, the daily average increased slightly to 41 suicides, totaling 12,335 cases.
Jashore district recorded the highest number of suicides (1,454 cases) between October 2022 and October 2025.
Common suicide methods include hanging, poisoning, self-immolation, and jumping in front of trains.
Experts emphasize the need for coordinated action across multiple ministries for effective suicide prevention.
