Himachal Pradesh Bill Expands Panchayat Disqualification Family Definition

Himachal Pradesh Bill Expands Panchayat Disqualification Family Definition

Himachal Pradesh changed a rule about who can run in local village elections.

The rule applies when someone in a family illegally occupies government or community land.

Now, a daughter-in-law can also be counted as part of the family.

This means she could be barred from elections if a relative’s encroachment leads to disqualification.

BJP leaders say this could punish women who had nothing to do with the land dispute.

They especially questioned why a daughter-in-law should be responsible for an in-law’s actions.

The government says families who benefit from encroached property should share responsibility.

It also says the law was made after legal advice and was not aimed at one particular person.
