Maharashtra SEC Postpones Local Polls
The State Election Commission in Maharashtra decided to postpone some local elections just a day before they were supposed to happen.
This decision upset many people, including politicians from different parties.
The elections were supposed to be on December 2, 2025, but now they will be on December 20, 2025.
The leaders said this is unfair because candidates had already campaigned for 15 days and were ready to vote.
The commission said they had to do this because of some legal issues and problems with the election process.
Both the ruling and opposition parties are criticizing the decision, saying it was poorly planned and caused confusion.
Voting for the first phase of the elections began as scheduled for 264 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, with nearly 100 million voters eligible to participate.
The results will be announced after vote-counting on December 3, 2025.
The State Election Commission (SEC) of Maharashtra postponed elections for 24 municipal councils, 20 nagar panchayats, and 154 ward seats from December 2, 2025, to December 20, 2025.
The decision was criticized by both ruling and opposition parties, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Congress leader Harshvardhan Sapkal.
Critics argued that the postponement was unfair to candidates who had completed their campaigns and that the SEC's decision was poorly timed and executed.
The SEC cited ongoing court matters and procedural irregularities as reasons for the postponement.
