Madhya Pradesh Passes Uniform Civil Code
The Madhya Pradesh government has passed a new law called the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
This law aims to give equal rights to men and women, especially in matters like property and marriage.
The Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, said that people who have more than one marriage at the same time will go to jail.
The law also sets the same marriage age for everyone: 21 for boys and 18 for girls.
Marriages must be registered, and only courts can grant divorces.
The opposition party, Congress, protested against the bill, saying the government should focus on other important issues like giving more reservations to certain communities.
Despite the protests, the bill was passed.
Madhya Pradesh assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill on July 21, 2026.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav asserted that people engaging in more than one marriage simultaneously will be jailed.
