India Cockroach Movement Leaders Released as Opposition Plans Protests

Leaders of a youth-led movement in India were released after being detained before a planned protest.

The protest was about changes to voter lists and called for the chief election official to resign.

The Election Commission says it removed entries that were duplicated, belonged to people who had died, or were fraudulent.

Critics say the changes may have unfairly affected minorities.

Authorities closed the protest area and restricted some transport and internet service.

More than 2,000 people were detained in Delhi, according to a home ministry official cited by Reuters.

The movement and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi say they will keep protesting.

The Election Commission says people removed by mistake can sign up again.
