India Post's Plan to Sell Mutual Funds Faces Challenges
India Post, which has a huge number of branches all over the country, is trying to train its postmen to sell mutual funds.
This is a big task because postmen are used to selling safe, guaranteed products like savings schemes, but mutual funds are more complex and risky.
Experts are worried that postmen might not be able to explain these products well, especially to people in rural areas who are not familiar with them.
There are also concerns about the digital tools needed for customer verification and the risk of selling the wrong products to people who expect guaranteed returns.
The plan is to start with simple mutual funds and see how it goes before expanding the program.
India Post aims to train 1 lakh postmen to sell mutual funds, leveraging its vast network of 1.6 lakh branches.
Challenges include training postmen to sell complex, riskier products and ensuring they can explain them clearly.
Initial focus will be on simpler mutual fund categories like index and liquid funds to prevent mis-selling.
Digital KYC processes are being developed to streamline customer onboarding, a major hurdle in rural areas.
Pilot launch is expected in Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra, with national rollout planned based on initial results.
