Punjab Speaker Criticizes Apple Import Duty Cut
The leader of Punjab's government, Kultar Singh Sandhwan, is very upset because the national government decided to lower the tax on apples coming from New Zealand.
He thinks this is unfair to Indian apple farmers and will hurt their businesses.
He says this decision is like old times when foreign companies were favored over local producers.
He wants the government to change its mind to protect Indian farmers.
Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan criticized the Central Government's decision to reduce the import duty on New Zealand apples from 50% to 25%.
He termed the move a 'direct betrayal' of apple farmers and against the spirit of Swadeshi.
Sandhwan warned that the decision threatens India's apple-based economy, valued at nearly ₹5,000 crore.
He stated that the livelihood of lakhs of farmer families dependent on horticulture would be adversely affected.
