Maharashtra Faces Scams in Building Repairs and Temple Lands
The Maharashtra government has ordered an investigation into tenders for repairing old buildings in Mumbai.
These tenders had very low bids, much lower than the estimated cost.
A politician named Amin Patel raised this issue in the state assembly, saying that contractors might be building illegal floors and selling them.
The government has asked an official named Aseem Gupta to look into this.
There are also concerns about these old buildings collapsing during the monsoon.
The government is also trying to get permission to take over buildings that are in very bad condition to prevent accidents.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar alleged a large-scale scam involving temple trust lands across Maharashtra and demanded a white paper detailing the extent of the alleged irregularities.
The Legislative Assembly passed an amendment bill providing free regularisation of residential houses built on ‘Madat Mash’ inam lands, benefiting nearly 70,000 families.
The government denied any connection between the amendment and temple or deity lands, stating it is confined strictly to Madat Mash inam lands.
Maharashtra government ordered an inquiry into tenders for repairing dilapidated buildings in Mumbai quoting 100-140% below estimated cost.
Congress MLA Amin Patel raised concerns in the Assembly about potential scams and illegal construction by contractors.
Additional Chief Secretary Aseem Gupta will conduct the inquiry and scrap irregular contracts.
Government seeks to lift stay on Section 79A amendment to acquire unsafe cessed buildings, with next Supreme Court hearing on January 15.
