SC asks Centre for national policy on common utility ducts
The Supreme Court of India has asked the central government to think about making a national policy.
This policy would require that when new roads and highways are built, they should include common utility ducts.
These ducts would help avoid the need to dig up roads frequently for maintenance.
The court gave the government four weeks to consider this idea.
The request came after a person named Haripriya Patel filed a petition in 2021, asking for a solution to the problem of frequent road digging.
The Supreme Court asked the Centre to consider a national policy for common utility ducts in infrastructure projects.
The request was made during the hearing of a PIL filed by Haripriya Patel in 2021.
The bench consisted of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.
The court gave the government four weeks to explore the idea of a comprehensive national policy.
The aim is to avoid periodic digging of roads and highways for utility maintenance.
