Nepal Barrier Lake Breaches Banks, Raising Fresh Flood Threat

Nepal Barrier Lake Breaches Banks, Raising Fresh Flood Threat

A mudslide in Nepal created a lake near the border with China.

The lake was held back by a natural wall of earth.

That wall broke or started to overflow.

The water level then began rising.

This could send more water downstream and cause new floods.

China warned people about the danger and paused rescue work on its side.

China also sent an engineering team to help assess the situation.

Nepal stopped rescue work for about 90 minutes while officials checked the risks.
