DG Shipping Verifies Crew Certificates to Protect Jobs
The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) is checking if sailors' certificates from other countries are real to protect Indian sailors' jobs.
This comes after unions complained about a rule that stopped ship owners from hiring sailors with certificates from some places.
The DGS found that many sailors have certificates from countries that don't have agreements with India.
Now, sailors have to prove their certificates are real.
If they are, they can work on ships.
If not, their certificates might be canceled.
DG Shipping is verifying foreign-issued crew certificates for authenticity.
The move follows protests from seafarer unions over a July 18 order.
A writ petition has been filed in the Bombay High Court.
Approximately 3,800 seafarers hold certificates from countries without mutual recognition agreements.
DGS will permit seafarers to join vessels if documents are genuine.
