Canada Seeks Extradition of Preet Panesar in Gold Heist
Canada has asked India to send back Preet Panesar, who is one of the main suspects in a big gold theft worth $20 million.
This is the largest gold heist in Canada.
Another suspect, Arsalan Chaudhary, was arrested at an airport in Canada.
Panesar is currently in Punjab, India.
The Indian authorities are also investigating how money from the heist might have been sent to India through illegal channels.
Panesar's lawyer has not commented on the case.
The Canadian police say Panesar played a crucial role in the theft.
Canada has formally requested the extradition of Preet Panesar from India in connection with the 2023 gold heist, which involved the theft of gold valued at $20 million.
Panesar, identified as a key accused in the case, was previously traced to a location in Punjab. The Enforcement Directorate in India has conducted searches and filed a case against him.
Canadian authorities have charged or named nine individuals in the investigation, with Panesar listed as wanted.
Arsalan Chaudhary, another key suspect, was arrested at Toronto Pearson International Airport on January 12.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating hawala funds allegedly received by Panesar, totaling over Rs 8.5 crore, linked to the gold heist.
