High Court Grants Bail to Sonia in 2001 Murder Case
A long time ago, a woman named Sonia and her husband were accused of killing eight people in her family.
They were sentenced to death, but later it was changed to life in prison.
Recently, a high court said the government was wrong to not let them out early and ordered a new review.
For now, Sonia is allowed to leave jail while they decide.
There is also a big fight over who should get the family's property.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court granted interim bail to Sonia Poonia, the prime convict in the 2001 Uklana family murder case.
The court set aside the Haryana government's decision rejecting her premature release, calling it 'patently perverse, illegal, and unsustainable.'
The court ordered a fresh review of Sonia's case under the State’s 2002 premature release policy within two months.
Sonia and her husband, Sanjeev Kumar, were originally sentenced to death in 2004, later commuted to life imprisonment in 2014.
The murders involved eight family members, including Sonia's father, stepmother, siblings, sister-in-law, and three minor children.
