India Launches Mission for Pulses Self-Sufficiency
The Indian government has started a big plan called the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses.
They want to grow more pulses, like lentils and beans, so India doesn't have to buy them from other countries.
Right now, India grows about 25 million tonnes of pulses but needs to grow 35 million tonnes by 2030.
The government will give farmers special seeds and help set up places to pack and process pulses.
This is important because pulses are good for health and the soil, but farmers haven't been growing enough because they don't make much money from them.
The government hopes this plan will make pulses more profitable and encourage farmers to grow more.
The Union Cabinet approved a ₹11,440 crore Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses over five years.
The mission aims to increase pulses production from 25 million tonnes to 35 million tonnes by 2030.
The plan includes distributing 126 lakh quintals of certified seeds and setting up 1,000 packaging and processing units.
Pulses cultivation has been neglected due to low profitability and weak procurement support.
India imported 4.739 million tonnes of pulses in 2023-24, spending $3.74 billion.
