Jimmy Wales' Optimism in 2026's Turbulent World
In 2026, the world is going through a lot of changes and tensions.
There are problems with trust in governments and international relationships.
But Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, shows us that big groups of people can work together if they have the right tools and trust in each other.
Wikipedia started 25 years ago and has grown to include over 300 languages.
It works because people want to share knowledge and help each other.
Wales believes that even though the world can be messy and complicated, people can still cooperate and make things better.
He thinks that hope and hard work can help us solve problems, even when things seem difficult.
Wikipedia is a good example of how people can come together to create something useful and lasting.
January 2026 has seen significant geopolitical turbulence, including the parading of Venezuela's President in handcuffs, tensions over Greenland, and Trump alienating the EU.
Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, has spent 25 years proving that large-scale cooperation is possible through his project.
Wikipedia's success is attributed to its principles of fun, openness, and trust in a self-organizing community, rather than rigid expert-driven approaches.
Wales argues that most people, given the right framework, want to collaborate in good faith, and that optimism can be a productive force.
Wikipedia's community continues to work on the project even if the outside world stops paying attention, showing a form of faith that is not performative.
