Supreme Court quashes rape conviction after couple marries
The Supreme Court in India did something unusual.
They helped a man and a woman who were in a legal fight to get back together.
The man was accused of promising to marry the woman but not doing so, which led to a rape case.
The court felt that if they could resolve their issues, the case might end.
They suggested the couple get married, and they did.
Because of this, the court decided to drop all the charges against the man.
The court used its special powers to make this happen.
The man, who was a government employee, was also allowed to go back to his job.
The Supreme Court quashed a rape conviction after the accused man and the complainant woman married.
The couple met on social media, developed a relationship, and the woman consented to a physical relationship based on a promise of marriage.
The woman filed an FIR in 2021 when the marriage did not materialize, leading to the man's conviction under Sections 376 and 417 of the IPC.
The Supreme Court, sensing a potential resolution, suggested the couple marry, which they did on July 22, 2025.
The court quashed the FIR, trial court judgment, and conviction, and directed the revocation of the man's suspension from his government job.
