Chinnari Seeks Reconciliation After Two Decades of Maoist Conflict

Chinnari Seeks Reconciliation After Two Decades of Maoist Conflict

Chinnari is a village in central India that was hurt by fighting between Maoist rebels and the police.

Many people were killed, arrested or forced to leave their homes.

Some villagers say the police wrongly targeted civilians, while others say the Maoists also punished and killed people they suspected of helping the police.

Several Yadav families left the village after one family member was killed.

Now that Maoist activity has greatly decreased, some displaced families want to return.

Other villagers are afraid and do not yet trust them.

Meetings have been held to discuss how people might live together again.

The families face conditions involving legal cases, homes and permanent residence.

Experts say peace needs more than the end of fighting and requires help for communities to rebuild trust and their lives.
