Islamic State shifts India recruitment from foreign travel online

Security officials say the Islamic State is changing how it tries to recruit people in India.

Fewer Indian youths are now trying to travel to places such as Syria, Iraq, or Afghanistan to join the group.

Instead, alleged recruiters are telling some people to stay in India.

They may try to influence people online and encourage activities inside the country.

Officials are especially worried about teenagers in schools and colleges.

They say young people could be exposed to extremist ideas for many years.

Investigators have found alleged networks in several Indian states.

In one Maharashtra case, recruits reportedly used online meetings and messaging apps after pledging allegiance.

Agencies are trying to stop these networks before they become more organised or violent.
