UN Approves 2026 Budget Cuts Amid Financial Crisis
The United Nations has decided to cut its budget for next year by 7% because it doesn't have enough money.
This means they will have to reduce the number of people working for them by almost 3,000.
The main reason for this is that the United States, which usually pays a big part of the UN's budget, hasn't paid what it owes.
The UN's leader, Antonio Guterres, had suggested even bigger cuts, but the final budget approved is a bit higher than what he proposed.
The US has been criticizing the UN for spending too much money and wants the organization to focus more on stopping wars and less on other things.
Other parts of the UN, like Unicef and Unesco, are also facing money problems and will have to cut back as well.
UN approves 7% reduction in 2026 budget, down to $3.45 billion from $3.72 billion in 2025.
Budget cuts include reducing 2,900 positions due to financial crisis.
US owes $660 million in arrears and has not paid the $826 million bill for 2025.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres proposed a $577 million cut and 18% job reduction.
US pledges $2 billion to UN's humanitarian arm amid budget cuts.
