Karnataka Court Suspends Life Sentences in 2016 Murder Case
The Karnataka High Court decided to pause the life sentences of Vinay Kulkarni, a former Congress member, and eight other people who were found guilty of killing a BJP member in 2016.
The court also let a police officer named Channakeshava B Tingarikar go on bail after he had a seven‑year sentence.
Because Kulayni was removed from his position as a lawmaker, this pause might let him become a member again while his appeal is being considered.
The murder was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation and was originally decided by a special court in Bengaluru.
Kulayni had earlier been given bail by the Supreme Court, but that was taken back in 2025 because of possible witness tampering.
Now, both Kulayni and the police officer can stay free while their cases are reviewed.
Karnataka High Court suspended life sentences of former Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni and eight co‑convicts for the 2016 murder of BJP member Yogesh Gowda.
The court also released suspended police officer Channakeshava B Tingarikar from a seven‑year sentence, ordering bail for both cases.
Kulkarni, who was disqualified as an MLA in May, may be reinstated pending appeal after the sentence suspension.
The murder case was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation and originally convicted by a special court in Bengaluru.
Kulkarni had previously been granted bail by the Supreme Court in 2021, but it was revoked in June 2025 over alleged witness‑tampering.
