Food Delivery Platforms Expand Workforce Unevenly
Food delivery companies like Swiggy and Zomato have been adding more delivery workers over the past two years.
Swiggy added more workers than Zomato, but didn't spend as much money on employee expenses.
Zomato's spending on employees went up a lot, while Swiggy's spending grew more slowly.
This shows that even though more people are being hired, the money they earn isn't growing at the same rate.
Experts say that just counting the number of workers doesn't tell the whole story.
It's important to look at how much they earn, how stable their income is, and how long they stay in the job.
Food delivery and ride-hailing make up most of India's gig workforce, but it's still a very small part of the total jobs in the country.
Swiggy's delivery partner base grew by 28.2% from FY24 to H1FY26, while Zomato's grew by 12.5%.
Zomato's employee expenses increased by 46.6% year-on-year in Q3 2025, compared to Swiggy's 13.7% increase.
Food delivery and ride-hailing account for over 60% of India's gig workforce.
Gig work platforms employed 1.37 million workers in 2023-24, up from 1.08 million in 2021-22, but still only 0.2% of the total workforce.
Experts argue that headcount alone is an incomplete measure of labour outcomes, with indicators like net earnings per hour and income volatility being more important.
