Japan deploys troops to help trap bears amid deadly attack surge
Bears in Japan have been attacking people a lot more than usual, and sadly, many people have been killed.
Local helpers were overwhelmed, so Japan's army was asked to help.
Soldiers are now assisting by transporting, setting, and checking special traps for the bears.
However, only trained hunters will actually catch and stop the bears because they have the right skills.
The attacks have made people in the countryside scared to go outside, affecting their daily lives and causing some schools to close temporarily.
This is happening more often because bears are coming closer to towns, looking for food as their natural food sources are changing and there are fewer people in the rural areas.
The government is also planning new measures, like getting more hunters and making it easier to shoot bears in populated areas.
Japan has deployed military troops to Akita Prefecture to assist in trapping bears following a record wave of over 100 attacks and at least 12 deaths.
The operation began in Kazuno city, Akita Prefecture, which has experienced a sharp rise in bear sightings and fatalities, with soldiers setting traps and transporting hunters.
Troops are providing logistical support, including transporting, setting, and inspecting traps, and disposing of dead bears, but will not use firearms.
Factors contributing to the surge include climate change impacting food sources, rural depopulation, and a decline in the aging hunter population.
Residents are urged to take precautions, as attacks have impacted daily life, with bears seen near schools, train stations, and supermarkets.
