Subansiri Hydroelectric Project Awaits Reservoir Authority Despite Commissioning
Imagine a big water project that makes electricity.
To make sure the water is managed safely, experts said they needed a special team, like a water boss, before they started using the project.
This team, which was supposed to be in charge of all the water decisions, was never created.
Instead, they might create a committee, which is like a group of people from different places, but it's not the same.
This committee will help manage water flow and tell people about potential floods.
The project is getting ready to start, but the important water boss team is still missing, which could cause a problem.
This team is important to prevent sudden floods.
Now they are working to finish the project and expect to have everything ready soon.
The 2,000-MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) is in the commissioning phase.
An integrated reservoir management authority, recommended in 2019, hasn't been established.
The expert committee suggested the Subansiri Independent Integrated Reservoir Management Authority (SIIRMA) or Subansiri River Basin Authority (SRBA) before commissioning.
Instead of the authority, a Subansiri Reservoir Regulation Committee (SRRC) might be formed.
Once fully operational in 2026, the project will be India's premier hydroelectric facility.
- Who
- The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Assam government, Arunachal Pradesh government, Central government, NHPC.
- What
- The integrated reservoir management authority for the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) has not been constituted, despite the project entering the commissioning phase.
- When
- The expert committee recommended the authority in 2019, but it has not been set up six years later.
- Where
- The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in India.
- Why
- The authority's purpose is to manage the reservoir to prevent adverse downstream impacts, including potential flash floods. It has yet to be constituted despite the project's commissioning phase.
