Indian-Origin Lawyer Faces $470K Fine Over Fraudulent Asylum Claims
Suraj Raj Singh is a lawyer who helps people from India try to stay in the United States.
The U.S. government says he made fake paperwork for 54 people, using the same stories for each case.
Because of this, the agency wants to fine him more than $470,000.
The fine is part of a new rule to stop people from cheating the immigration system.
The case is still being decided, so we don’t know the final outcome yet.
Suraj Raj Singh is accused of filing 118 fraudulent asylum documents in 54 cases.
ICE seeks a maximum civil penalty of $470,584 under a DHS directive to crack down on asylum fraud.
DHS General Counsel James Percival warned that fraudulent claims threaten public safety and undermine the immigration system.
This is the second major civil penalty case against an immigration lawyer after a similar case against Vinod Doddamani.
Legal proceedings are ongoing; a final decision has not yet been made.
