Incomplete Barrage Floods Adilabad Crops
A big water project called the Korata‑Chanaka barrage was supposed to help farmers in Adilabad, Telangana, by storing water for a second crop and keeping floods under control.
But the project isn’t finished yet, so the water can’t be kept in the reservoir.
Heavy rain in nearby Maharashtra sent a lot of water downstream, and the barrage had to let it out.
This floodwater covered crops like cotton, soya, and redgram, hurting farmers.
Officials say the project will need more money and work to finish, and even after it’s done, they will still have to release water during very heavy rains to keep the barrage safe.
The Korata‑Chanaka barrage on the Penganga river is incomplete, preventing water storage for irrigation.
Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra forced the barrage to release floodwater, submerging crops in Adilabad district.
Preliminary estimates show about 5,000 acres of cotton, soya, and redgram crops were damaged.
The project, costing ₹2,100 crore, has spent ₹1,200 crore so far and needs an additional ₹500 crore to finish.
Officials say the barrage will still need to release water during heavy inflows even after completion.
