Bail Granted to 9 in India Gate Air Pollution Protest
A group of mostly college students protested against air pollution at India Gate in Delhi.
During the protest, some police officers were allegedly attacked with pepper spray.
The police said the protesters supported a banned group called Naxalites.
Two cases were filed against the protesters.
In one case, all 17 accused were granted bail.
In the other case, the court is still deciding whether to grant bail to seven protesters.
The protesters' lawyers argued that being part of a WhatsApp group or raising slogans is not a crime.
The police said they need more time to investigate.
The court will decide on the bail for the second case on Thursday.
Nine protesters, mostly college students, were granted bail in one case related to a protest against air pollution at India Gate.
Two FIRs were lodged against the protesters, one for assault and obstruction of public servants, and another for alleged pepper spray attacks and Naxal links.
All 17 accused in the first FIR have been granted bail, while the court reserved its order on the bail pleas of seven in the second FIR.
Defense lawyers argued that being part of WhatsApp groups or raising slogans is not a crime and that custody is not required for digital records.
The police argued that custody is needed as the investigation is still underway and no permission was sought for the protest.
