How Long Does a Settled Loan Tag Affect Credit?

A “Settled” loan means the lender accepted less money than was originally owed.

A “Closed” loan means the borrower paid everything required.

The settled label can usually stay on a credit report for up to seven years.

The seven-year period starts when the settlement is recorded, not when the loan began.

The label can hurt a credit score, especially during the first year or two.

Paying other bills on time can gradually make the old settlement less important to lenders.

In some cases, a borrower can pay the waived amount and ask the lender to change the label to “Closed.”

However, the lender does not have to approve the request, and no service can legitimately remove the tag early.
