BMW Begins Prototype Production of Next-Gen Hydrogen Fuel Cell
BMW is working on a new type of engine that runs on hydrogen, like a fuel cell.
They've started building early versions of this engine, called prototypes.
This new engine is smaller and works better than the previous ones.
BMW is working with Toyota on this project, but they are also designing their own version.
They plan to start making these engines in larger numbers in 2028.
They are building the prototypes in Germany and plan to produce important parts for it there, too.
This is a step towards cars that don't use gasoline.
BMW has started prototype production of its 3rd generation hydrogen fuel cell system.
The system is designed with strategic cooperation from Toyota.
The new system is around 25% more compact and more efficient.
Series production is planned for 2028 in Steyr.
The Landshut plant will begin manufacturing components in mid-2026.
