India's Carbon Emissions Blindspot: Soaring Concrete Skyline
India is building a lot of new buildings, which is causing a lot of carbon emissions.
These emissions come from both running the buildings and making them in the first place.
The country has promised to reduce its emissions, but it doesn't have strong enough laws to make sure this happens.
Experts say India needs better rules to control how buildings are made and used, so they don't harm the environment as much.
Without these changes, India's cities could keep adding to climate change.
India's built environment contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, with the buildings sector being a major source.
The country is set to add over 50 billion square metres of new building stock in the coming decades.
Current environmental laws and urban planning regulations do not adequately address embodied carbon emissions from construction.
India has committed to reducing emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, but lacks enforceable mechanisms to achieve these targets.
Experts recommend amending environmental laws, updating urban planning regulations, and setting binding carbon limits for the built environment.
- Who
- India's government, urban planners, environmentalists, and real estate developers
- What
- The growing carbon emissions from India's rapidly urbanizing built environment
- When
- Present and future, with immediate action needed
- Where
- Across India, particularly in urban areas
- Why
- To address the significant and growing share of greenhouse gas emissions from the buildings sector and meet climate targets
Environmental Conservationists
Real Estate Developers
Regulation of Carbon Emissions
Environmental Conservationists
Advocate for strict regulations and enforceable targets to limit carbon emissions from the built environment, including embodied carbon.
Real Estate Developers
Argue for market-driven solutions and minimal regulatory interference, emphasizing economic growth and development.
Urban Planning and Building Codes
Environmental Conservationists
Push for amendments to environmental laws and urban planning regulations to include carbon limits and sustainability measures.
Real Estate Developers
Prefer existing regulations that allow for higher Floor Area Ratio and building heights, focusing on market logic and economic benefits.
