At Least 1,000 Detained in Delhi Ahead of CJP Protest

Police detained at least 1,000 people in Delhi overnight before a protest planned for Saturday.

The protest was called by the Cockroach Janta Party–All India Students’ Association.

Protesters wanted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign.

Police said the detentions were meant to prevent trouble.

They said some people had previously helped organize protests and could create an unlawful situation.

Around 250 detainees were from Delhi’s South East district, including areas near Shaheen Bagh.

More than 100 were from Shahdara and East Delhi.

The article does not say how many people were ultimately able to attend the protest.
