Steel Looms Improve Lives and Preserve Kashmiri Carpet Craft
Imagine you have to sit in a tiny, uncomfortable chair all day to do your homework.
That's what it was like for carpet weavers in Kashmir for many years!
They sat on the floor with old wooden looms, and their legs and backs would hurt a lot.
Now, scientists have made new looms out of steel.
These new looms are like comfy chairs with adjustable heights, so the weavers can sit up straight and work without pain.
This means they can make beautiful carpets for longer periods and faster, which helps them earn more money.
It's like upgrading from an old bicycle to a new, comfortable car for their work.
This change is helping to keep the special art of Kashmiri carpet making alive for the future.
Modern steel looms developed by IICT, Srinagar, are replacing traditional wooden looms for Kashmiri carpet artisans.
The new looms are ergonomically designed with height adjustments to reduce chronic pain and discomfort for weavers.
100 steel looms have been distributed, with an additional 100 sanctioned by the Ministry of Textiles funded by ₹51 lakh.
Artisans report increased comfort, faster production, and reduced fatigue with the new steel looms.
These innovations aim to revive the traditional carpet industry, which employs nearly 50,000 people, and preserve a centuries-old craft.
