Allahabad High Court Calls for Tougher White-Collar Crime Enforcement

The Allahabad High Court considered a bail request from builder Anil Mithas.

He is accused of diverting money collected from people who wanted to buy homes.

Investigators say Rs 126.30 crore became proceeds of crime.

The case concerns money collected for 1,468 homes, although possession was initially given to only 35 buyers.

Mithas’ lawyers said some related cases had been settled or closed and that there was no proof of conspiracy.

The Enforcement Directorate said an independent audit showed the money was diverted.

The court rejected bail because it considered the allegations serious.

It also said wealthy people should not receive gentler justice.

The court directed that the trial be handled quickly.
