Myanmar's Pro-Military Party Wins First Election Phase
In Myanmar, the pro-military party called USDP says they won a lot in the first part of the elections held by the military.
The military took control of the country in 2021.
The USDP won 82 seats in the lower house out of 102 where votes were counted.
The capital city's votes all went to the USDP.
The last election in 2020 was won by a different party, but they were removed after the military took over.
Many people, including those who support democracy and some countries, say the election is not fair.
The military chief says the election is fair and they will give power back to civilian leaders.
There are still two more parts of the election to come, but some places are too unsafe for voting because of the fighting.
The military has made strict laws to protect the election, with severe punishments for anyone who tries to interfere.
Myanmar's pro-military USDP claims victory in the first phase of junta-run elections, winning 82 out of 102 lower house seats.
The election is held in three phases, with the first phase completed on Dec 28 and two more scheduled for January 11 and 25.
The USDP won all eight townships in the capital Naypyidaw.
The National League for Democracy (NLD), which won the last election in 2020, was dissolved after the 2021 coup and did not participate.
Critics, including Western diplomats and the UN, condemn the election, citing a crackdown on dissent and a candidate list dominated by military allies.
