Calcutta HC Disposes TMC Petition, Adjourns ED's
The Calcutta High Court recently handled two important cases.
The first was from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the ruling party in West Bengal.
They were worried that the Enforcement Directorate (ED), a government agency, might have taken important documents and data from their election consultancy firm, I-PAC, during a raid on January 8.
The ED said they did not take anything.
The court decided to close this case because the ED said they had not taken any data.
The second case was from the ED.
They wanted the court to ask another agency, the CBI, to investigate what happened on January 8.
On that day, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, went to the I-PAC office and the home of its director, Pratik Jain, during the raids.
The ED said she took some documents and devices.
The court decided to wait and let the Supreme Court, which is India's highest court, handle this case first.
So, both cases are now going to the Supreme Court for further decisions.
The Calcutta High Court disposed of the Trinamool Congress' petition for data protection, as the ED claimed no data was seized during the raids.
The court adjourned the ED's petition for a CBI probe into the events of January 8, directing it to the Supreme Court.
The ED alleged that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took documents and devices from the I-PAC office and Pratik Jain's residence during the raids.
The TMC claimed that the ED seized documents related to the party's strategy and ideology, a claim denied by the ED.
The Supreme Court will now hear the ED's petition, which is similar to the one adjourned by the Calcutta High Court.
