Only 651 of 923 UDAN routes operational, 123 shut early
The government has shared an update on the UDAN scheme, which aims to make air travel affordable for common citizens by connecting small towns.
Out of 923 routes awarded, only 651 are currently operational, while 123 were shut down before their three-year term.
The main reasons for the early closure of these routes include the COVID-19 pandemic, aircraft shortages, supply chain issues, maintenance problems, and low passenger demand.
Additionally, 14 airports under the UDAN scheme are currently non-operational due to various factors like poor visibility, runway restrictions, and low passenger load.
The government provides support to airlines through viability gap funding, airport upgrades, and operational flexibility to ensure the success of the UDAN scheme.
The first UDAN flight operated between Shimla and Delhi in 2017, and since then, the scheme has significantly boosted regional connectivity across India.
Only 651 of the 923 UDAN routes awarded are currently operational.
123 routes were discontinued before completing their three-year term.
Reasons for discontinuation include COVID-19, aircraft shortages, low demand, and maintenance issues.
14 airports under the UDAN scheme are currently non-operational.
The government provides viability gap funding, airport upgrades, and operational flexibility to support the UDAN scheme.
