Icelanders Vote on Restarting European Union Membership Talks

Icelanders Vote on Restarting European Union Membership Talks

Iceland is asking its people whether it should start talking with the European Union again about joining.

Iceland already trades with the EU and allows people to travel freely across much of Europe.

Supporters say joining could make Iceland safer and provide economic benefits.

Opponents say Iceland is doing well outside the EU and should keep making its own rules.

Fishing is especially important because Iceland wants to keep full control of its waters.

Some fishing leaders worry European boats could eventually fish there.

The vote does not make Iceland an EU member.

If people vote yes, many years of negotiations would begin, followed by another vote on any final agreement.
