CAG to Audit Government Departments in Real Time
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India is planning to change how it checks the government's spending.
Instead of looking at the accounts after the money has been spent, the CAG wants to check the spending as it happens.
This is called real-time auditing.
The idea is to catch any problems early and make sure the money is spent correctly.
The CAG will use digital systems to look at data as it is being created, which will help them spot issues like delays or cost overruns right away.
This change is expected to happen by late 2025 or early 2026 and will affect big projects like highways, railways, and power plants, as well as smaller projects like health missions and welfare disbursements.
The goal is to make sure the government's money is used well and to improve how projects are run.
The CAG is moving from post-facto to real-time audits of government departments to improve oversight of public spending and project execution.
Real-time audits will allow the CAG to review data, documents, and progress metrics as they are generated, enabling early detection of irregularities and course correction.
The shift is driven by the need for closer and more continuous oversight of larger, technology-driven government programs.
Real-time audits will affect capital-intensive projects like highways, railways, and power projects, as well as schemes with high public interaction like health missions and welfare disbursements.
The success of real-time audits will depend on the smooth integration of the CAG with digital systems across ministries and the departments' view of this as a governance tool rather than a compliance burden.
