Central govt teachers seek OPS, 65-year retirement age, more leave

Central govt teachers seek OPS, 65-year retirement age, more leave

Some teachers who work for central government schools in India asked a special group called the 8th Pay Commission for better pay, pensions, and working conditions.

The commission meets with different groups of workers and then makes recommendations about their jobs.

The teachers met the commission in New Delhi on August 7.

They want to bring back the Old Pension Scheme, an older pension system in which retired teachers receive a pension paid by the government.

They also want to be allowed to keep working until they turn 65 instead of retiring at 60.

The teachers asked for more time off, including 30 earned leave days, 14 casual leave days, and 20 medical leave days every year.

They also want fathers who are the only working parent at home to be able to take child care leave.

Teachers from many kinds of schools, such as Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, joined in the meeting.

The commission is still listening to many groups before it decides what to recommend.
