India Food Subsidy Hiked by Rs 7,000 Crore for FY26 Amid Fiscal Constraints
Imagine the government has a big piggy bank to buy food for many people.
This year, they needed to put more money in that piggy bank to cover the cost of managing food grains.
So, they decided to add an extra 7,000 crore rupees for this year, making the total amount 2.1 lakh crore rupees.
This extra money helps a company called FCI, which stores and distributes the food.
They might need to borrow money because they have way too much rice, much more than they need to keep as a safety stash.
The government is also planning how much to put in the piggy bank for next year.
They want to make sure everyone gets their food, but they also need to be careful with their money because they didn't get as much tax money as they expected.
India's Finance Ministry has approved an additional Rs 7,000 crore for the Food Corporation of India's (FCI) grain management expenses in FY26.
This increase brings the total budgeted food subsidy for FY26 to Rs 2.1 lakh crore.
The allocation for the next financial year (2026-27) is planned to be around Rs 2.17 lakh crore.
FCI is expected to face a shortfall and may need to seek loans due to surplus grain stocks significantly exceeding buffer levels.
The Finance Ministry suggests de-linking expenses for open market sales and ethanol production from the core food subsidy budget.
