Tamil Nadu Allies Clash Over Rahul Gandhi’s 2029 PM Candidacy

A Tamil Nadu minister from the Congress party said Rahul Gandhi should be the party’s candidate to become prime minister in 2029.

He said there should be no confusion about the Congress position.

He did not want to discuss whether Vijay should be a deputy prime minister candidate.

Vijay leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, or TVK, which governs Tamil Nadu with Congress support.

Another TVK minister said the party remained firmly behind Vijay.

The two parties say their alliance is working, even though they have different ideas about national leadership.

Congress has already started preparing for the next parliamentary election.

Viswanathan also mentioned that other opposition parties could choose leaders such as Mamata Banerjee, Sharad Pawar or Chandrababu Naidu.
