Nepal Floods Revive Memories of Uttarakhand Disasters

Nepal Floods Revive Memories of Uttarakhand Disasters

Floods in Nepal reminded people of two terrible disasters in Uttarakhand, India.

In 2021, a sudden flow of mud, rocks and water rushed down the Rishiganga River.

It destroyed a hydropower project and caused a huge flood in nearby areas.

More than 200 people died, and roads, bridges, homes and fields were damaged.

In 2025, another disaster struck Dharali after water and large rocks came down the Khirgad river.

Much of the town, including homes, shops, hotels and orchards, was buried under deep layers of debris.

Experts say people should prepare for disasters before they happen, not only respond afterward.

They also want Himalayan countries to work together to protect the mountains and reduce future damage.
