JNU Cancels Auditorium Booking for Umar Khalid Book Discussion

JNU Cancels Auditorium Booking for Umar Khalid Book Discussion

A big university in India called JNU cancelled the use of a room where students planned to discuss a book.

The book is called 'Fractured Communities' and was written by Umar Khalid, a former student of the university who is now in jail.

The talk was planned for August 10, 2026, and was organised by the students' union.

It was meant to celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, which honours Adivasi, or tribal, communities.

The university said the room booking was cancelled because the organisers did not share all the facts about the programme.

The students' union said that reason is not believable and that the cancellation was meant to stop people from thinking and talking freely.

It said the discussion will still happen, and the plan is to hold it outside another building, called SSS-II, until a new venue is announced.

Umar Khalid has been in jail since September 2020 in a case connected to riots in Delhi, and he is still waiting for his trial.

The book tells the history of tribal communities in a region of India called Singhbhum.
