AFC Grants Indirect ACL 2 Slots
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has said no to letting Indian Super League (ISL) clubs join the Asian Champions League 2 (ACL 2) directly.
This is because the ISL season is shorter than usual, and the clubs won't play enough matches to qualify.
The ISL season will start on February 14, 2026, and each team will play only 16 matches instead of the usual 24.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) asked the AFC for a special exception, but the AFC said no.
This means ISL clubs will have to go through zonal qualifiers to join the ACL 2.
The AFC has, however, granted indirect slots to the league and Super Cup winners, allowing them to participate in the ACL 2 qualifiers.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who are banned until 2027-28, will not be eligible if they win the league.
AFC denies direct entry to ACL 2 for ISL clubs due to insufficient matches.
ISL 2025-26 season starts February 14, 2026, with 16 matches per club.
AIFF requested a one-time exemption for the 16-match season, but AFC refused.
ISL clubs must now qualify for ACL 2 through zonal qualifiers.
The season was delayed due to uncertainty over the Master Rights Agreement (MRA).
