North-East Needs Permanent Peace Compact for Inter-State Borders

North-East Needs Permanent Peace Compact for Inter-State Borders

Some states in India’s North-east still disagree about where their borders should be.

Another violent incident led to attacks on vehicles and road blockades between Assam and Meghalaya.

These blockades affected tourists, drivers, traders and families.

Assam and Meghalaya have already agreed on some disputed areas, but several disagreements remain.

Assam and Arunachal Pradesh also signed an agreement involving 123 villages.

The article says political agreements are not enough if local people do not trust or accept them.

It recommends regular government cooperation, better maps, emergency transport arrangements and shared economic projects to prevent future conflict.
